Chuo Line Green Car Guide — Comfortable Seats to the Mountains
How to ride the Chuo Line's new double-decker Green Car. A practical guide for hikers traveling from Tokyo to trailheads like Takao, Sagamiko, and Otsuki.
What is a Green Car?
Green Car is Japan’s equivalent of first class on local and rapid trains operated by JR East. Unlike limited express trains, you only need a regular ticket (or Suica) plus a Green Car ticket — no reserved seat booking required.
In March 2025, JR East introduced double-decker Green Cars (2 carriages) on the Chuo Line Rapid service. This is a game-changer for hikers heading to mountains west of Tokyo.
Why Use the Green Car?
- ✅ Guaranteed seat — even on crowded early morning trains
- ✅ Reclining seats for comfortable travel
- ✅ Fold-down tables — great for breakfast or planning your hike
- ✅ Upper deck views — stunning scenery along the Tama River
- ✅ Cheaper than express trains

How to Buy Green Car Tickets
1. Mobile Suica (Best Option)
Buy directly from the Suica app on your smartphone. This gives you the advance purchase price, which is cheaper than buying on the train.
Steps:
- Open the Suica app
- Tap “Green Ticket” (グリーン券)
- Select boarding and alighting stations
- Confirm purchase
2. Platform Ticket Machines
Look for the green-colored ticket machines on the platform.
Steps:
- Insert or tap your Suica
- Select your destination
- Confirm and purchase
3. On-Board Purchase
You can ask the attendant on the Green Car, but you’ll pay the higher on-board price.
Tip: Always buy in advance via Suica or platform machines to save money.
Pricing
Green Car pricing depends on distance and weekday vs. weekend.
Advance Purchase Price (Suica / Machine)
| Distance | Weekday | Weekend/Holiday |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 50km | ¥750 | ¥550 |
| Over 50km | ¥1,000 | ¥800 |

Distance reference:
- Shinjuku → Takao: ~42km (under 50km rate)
- Shinjuku → Otsuki: ~80km (over 50km rate)
- Tokyo → Takao: ~53km (over 50km rate)
Example: On a weekend, Shinjuku to Takao with advance Suica purchase = just ¥550 for a reclining seat with a view!
How to Ride
Step 1: Buy Your Green Car Ticket
Purchase via Mobile Suica or platform machine before boarding.
Step 2: Board the Green Car
Green Cars are typically cars 4 and 5 (middle of the train). Look for the green boarding marks on the platform.
Step 3: Touch the Seat Sensor
Above each seat, there’s a Green Car ticket reader. Touch your Suica to it.
- The light changes from red → green — you’re good to sit
- The green light means the seat is yours
- If you change seats, touch your Suica at the new seat
Step 4: Exit
Just get off at your station. No need to touch anything when leaving.
Choosing Your Seat
Upper Deck (2nd Floor)
- Best views — especially scenic along the Tama River valley
- Ceiling is slightly lower, but fine when seated
- Best for: Enjoying the scenery
Lower Deck (1st Floor)
- Quieter with less vibration
- Unique perspective at platform level
- Best for: Relaxing or sleeping
Flat Section (Car Ends)
- Higher ceiling, easier to bring large luggage
- Best for: Carrying big hiking backpacks
Tips for Hikers
Securing a Seat Early Morning
Popular hiking weekends (autumn foliage, spring greenery) get crowded.
- Aim for trains before 7:00 AM for the best chance
- Shinjuku-origin trains are easier to find seats
- Upper deck fills first — try the lower deck for a guaranteed seat
Mountain Access Guide
| Mountain | Station | Distance (from Shinjuku) | Weekend Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mt. Takao | Takao | Under 50km | ¥550 |
| Mt. Jinba | Fujino | Under 50km | ¥550 |
| Mt. Sekiro | Sagamiko | Over 50km | ¥800 |
| Mt. Iwadono | Otsuki | Over 50km | ¥800 |
Perfect for the Return Trip
After a long day of hiking, the Green Car is pure bliss.
- Recline in comfort even when tired and sweaty
- Use the table to organize souvenirs from the summit
- Watch the sunset over the Tama River from the upper deck
Pro tip: At Otsuki and Takao stations, many trains originate here, so Green Cars are often nearly empty on the return trip.
Green Car vs. Express Trains
The Chuo Line also has limited express trains “Azusa” and “Kaiji.” Here’s how they compare:
| Green Car | Express Azusa/Kaiji | |
|---|---|---|
| Price (Shinjuku→Otsuki) | ¥800 (weekend advance) | ~¥2,000 (reserved) |
| Travel time | ~90 min | ~60 min |
| Stops | All stations | Major stations only |
| Reservation | Not needed | Recommended |
| Best for | Takao–Otsuki hiking | Kofu/Matsumoto trips |
Bottom line: For hiking to Takao, Fujino, Sagamiko, or Otsuki, the Green Car is the best value. Save the express for destinations beyond Otsuki (Kofu, Matsumoto).
