Overview
Sonbutsu-sanso is a year-round mountain hut sitting right on the summit of Mt. Tonotake (1,491m), one of the most popular peaks in the Tanzawa mountain range. While Mt. Tonotake is accessible as a day hike from Tokyo, many hikers use the hut as a base for the Tanzawa Main Ridge traverse connecting Tonotake, Tanzawasan, and Hirugatake.
The summit views are outstanding — on clear days you can see Mt. Fuji, the Southern Alps, Sagami Bay, and even the Izu Islands. The silhouette of Mt. Fuji at sunset, visible only to overnight guests, is an unforgettable sight.

Access
The most common approach is the Okura Ridge route.
- Take a bus from Odakyu Line Shibusawa Station to Okura bus stop (about 15 minutes)
- Hike the Okura Ridge (Baka-One) for approximately 3.5–4 hours to reach the summit and the hut
The Omote Ridge route from Yabitsu Pass (about 3.5 hours) is another option.
Tip: The Okura Ridge is a relentless 1,200m climb. If that sounds daunting, the Omote Ridge from Yabitsu Pass offers a more varied route, though it includes some chain-assisted sections requiring caution.
Highlights
Summit Panorama
Mt. Tonotake’s summit is wide and open, offering 360-degree views. Winter days with crisp, clear air provide the sharpest views of Mt. Fuji. Staying overnight lets you catch both sunset and sunrise over the mountain.
Tanzawa Main Ridge Base
The Tanzawa Main Ridge traverse — from Tonotake to Tanzawasan to Hirugatake — is one of the most popular multi-day hikes near Tokyo. Sonbutsu-sanso is the natural starting point, with hikers spending the night before heading deeper into the range.
Small-Scale Charm
With a capacity of just 50, the hut has an intimate, welcoming atmosphere. Conversations with the hut keeper and fellow hikers are part of the mountain hut experience.
