Trail Overview
Mt. Adatara (安達太良山, Adatara-yama) rises to 1,700m in the center of Fukushima Prefecture. Though geologically unassuming, this mountain holds a special place in Japanese cultural memory thanks to the famous poem collection Chieko-sho (智恵子抄) by poet Kotaro Takamura. In the poem, his wife Chieko longs for “the real sky above Adatara” — pure and wide, nothing like the smoggy Tokyo sky. This romantic imagery draws visitors from across Japan who come seeking that same transcendent blue sky.
Practically, Mt. Adatara offers an excellent hiking experience for all skill levels. The Adatara Express gondola transports hikers to 1,350m, from which a pleasant ridge walk leads to the summit. The mountain is also one of Tohoku’s premier autumn foliage destinations, with peak color in early October drawing large crowds.
For international visitors: Mt. Adatara is one of the easier Hyakumeizan peaks to access from Tokyo, making it a good choice for a day trip. The gondola operation times and Chieko-sho cultural context add depth to the experience.
Recommended Route: Adatara Express Top Station to Summit, Out-and-Back
Take the gondola to Yakushidake Station (1,350m), then follow the ridge to the summit, with an optional detour to Mt. Tetsuyama for the crater viewpoint.
