Trail Overview
Mt. Buko (武甲山, Bukō-zan) rises to 1,304m on the border of Chichibu City and Yokoze Town in Saitama Prefecture. Listed among Japan’s 200 Famous Mountains, it is the unmistakable symbol of the Chichibu basin — visible from virtually anywhere in the valley.
What makes Mt. Buko truly unique is its dramatically quarried north face. Limestone mining has carved enormous terraces into the mountainside, creating a profile unlike any other peak in Japan. The original summit was 1,336m, but decades of quarrying have reduced it to the current 1,304m.
The summit hosts Ontake Shrine and commands sweeping views over the Chichibu basin. The standard day hike starts from Yokoze Station on the Seibu Chichibu Line, following the Omotesando (front approach) trail up and back.

Highlights
The Quarried North Face
Looking up at Mt. Buko from the Chichibu basin, the terraced limestone quarry on the north face is immediately striking. It represents a fascinating intersection of nature and industry — a landscape unique to Chichibu that tells the story of over a century of limestone mining.
Summit Shrine & Panorama
Ontake Shrine on the summit is dedicated to Yamato Takeru, a legendary prince of ancient Japan. The observation point next to the shrine offers panoramic views of the entire Chichibu basin, with the town spread out below and the mountains of Oku-Chichibu rolling away to the west. On clear days, Mt. Asama and Mt. Ryokami are visible.
Osugi-no-hiroba (Giant Cedar Rest Area)
A natural rest stop midway along the trail, marked by magnificent centuries-old cedar trees. Benches invite you to sit and absorb the serene forest atmosphere.
18th Station Water Point
A spring of cold, clean mountain water along the trail. A welcome refreshment spot, especially in warmer months. The water flows even in summer, though volume may decrease during dry spells.
Tips & Safety
- ⚠️ Long road walk to the trailhead: The 40-minute walk from Yokoze Station shares the road with vehicle traffic in places. Stay alert and consider a taxi
- ⚠️ Significant elevation gain: The trail climbs 800m from the trailhead (about 500m) to the summit (1,304m). Pace yourself and bring plenty of water
- ⚠️ Stay away from the quarry: The north side of the summit is an active limestone quarry. Never cross the barriers or fences
- ⚠️ Winter snow and ice: From December to March, expect snow and ice on the trail. Crampons and trekking poles recommended
- ⚠️ Water supply: The 18th Station spring may run low during dry periods. Carry enough water from Yokoze Station
- 🐻 Bear country: The Chichibu area is home to Asian black bears. Carry a bear bell and avoid hiking alone
