Trail Overview

Mt. Nikko-Shirane (日光白根山, Nikko-Shiranesan) is a 2,578m volcano straddling the border of Tochigi and Gunma Prefectures and the highest peak in the Kanto region and northward. It holds Hyakumeizan #37 status and is one of the most accessible high alpine destinations in the Nikko–Oze mountain zone.

The mountain’s most striking feature is Goshiki-numa (五色沼), a vibrant cobalt-blue crater lake just below the summit. On a clear day the summit delivers a 360-degree panorama spanning Mt. Hiuchigatake, Mt. Shibutsu, Mt. Nantai, Mt. Tanigawa, Mt. Fuji, and even the Northern Alps on exceptional days.

Access highlight: The Marunuma Kogen Ropeway rises from 1,500m to 2,000m in 15 minutes, making this Kanto’s highest peak surprisingly approachable for fit day-hikers.

A varied loop from the ropeway top station that visits both the summit and the iconic crater lake.
