Trail Overview
Mt. Oyama (大山, Ōyama) stands at 1,252m at the eastern edge of the Tanzawa mountain range in Isehara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Known since ancient times as the “Rain-Calling Mountain” (Afuri-yama), it has been a center of spiritual worship for centuries. The mountain is home to Oyama Afuri Shrine, and during the Edo period, pilgrimages to Oyama became so popular that they inspired their own genre of woodblock prints.
From Shinjuku, take the Odakyu Line to Isehara Station (about 60 minutes), then a bus and cable car bring you to the Lower Shrine. From there, the 90-minute climb to the summit serves as a perfect gateway to Tanzawa hiking.
The summit rewards you with a breathtaking panorama spanning the Kanto Plain, Sagami Bay, Enoshima Island, the Boso Peninsula, and on clear days, even Tokyo Skytree. After descending, the tradition is to enjoy Oyama’s famous tofu cuisine at restaurants along the approach road — completing a perfect day of hiking, worship, and gastronomy.

Highlights
Oyama Afuri Shrine
Allegedly founded in 97 BC, the Lower Shrine sits at about 700m elevation. The view of Sagami Bay from the top of its stone steps is stunning. The Main Shrine occupies the summit itself. The shrine’s sacred spring water (“Oyama Meisui”) is considered holy and can be taken home in bottles.
Kanto Plain Panorama
The summit offers an almost 360-degree panorama: the Kanto Plain to the east, Sagami Bay and Enoshima to the south, Mt. Fuji and the Tanzawa ridgeline to the west, and the Chichibu mountains to the north. Winter days with clear skies offer the most spectacular visibility.
Koma-sando & Oyama Tofu
The 360-step stone approach road to the cable car is the birthplace of Oyama koma (spinning tops) and is lined with tofu restaurants. Oyama tofu, made with pristine mountain spring water, has been a beloved delicacy since the Edo period. Yudofu (simmered tofu) is the must-try dish.
Autumn Illumination
Each year in mid to late November, Oyama-dera Temple and the Lower Shrine host evening illumination events amid the fall foliage. The cable car runs extended hours, offering a magical ride through lit-up autumn colors after dark.
Tips & Safety
- ⚠️ Rocky sections near the summit: The final stretch includes some steep rocky areas with chain handholds. Hiking shoes with ankle support recommended
- ⚠️ Leech warning: Mountain leeches may appear on rainy days from May to October. Carry leech repellent spray
- ⚠️ Autumn crowds: November weekends bring heavy congestion on the cable car, bus, and trails. Start early to avoid the worst
- ⚠️ Winter ice: From December to February, the trail may be icy in places. Light crampons recommended
- ⚠️ Check cable car hours: The last cable car down varies by season. Always confirm the schedule before starting your hike
