Mt. Asama (浅間山, Asama-yama, 2,568m) is an active volcano on the border of Gunma and Nagano Prefectures and one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains. It continues to emit volcanic steam and has a long history of major eruptions.

Mt. Asama is an active volcano with access restrictions based on the volcanic alert level.
- True summit (Kama-yama, 2,568m): Within 500m of the crater — permanently off-limits
- Mae-kake-yama (2,524m): Accessible only at alert Level 1
- Level 2 or above: Within 2km of the crater (including Mae-kake-yama) is off-limits
- Always check: Japan Meteorological Agency alert levels and updates from Komoro City and Tsumagoi Village
Recommended Route 1: Tengu Onsen to Mae-kake-yama (Round Trip)
Starting from Asama-sanso (Tengu Onsen), this route climbs to Mae-kake-yama, the highest accessible point.

From Kurumazaka Pass, hike along the outer rim to Mt. Kurofu (2,404m) for dramatic views of Mt. Asama.

- To Trailhead: Taxi from Komoro Station to Asama-sanso (Tengu Onsen), about 30 min. Paid parking at Asama-sanso for drivers
