Trail Overview

Mt. Asama (浅間山, Asama-yama, 2,568m) is an active volcano on the border of Gunma and Nagano Prefectures and one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains. It continues to emit volcanic steam and has a long history of major eruptions.

⚠️ Important: Access Restrictions

Mt. Asama is an active volcano with access restrictions based on the volcanic alert level.

  • True summit (Kama-yama, 2,568m): Within 500m of the crater — permanently off-limits
  • Mae-kake-yama (2,524m): Accessible only at alert Level 1
  • Level 2 or above: Within 2km of the crater (including Mae-kake-yama) is off-limits
  • Always check: Japan Meteorological Agency alert levels and updates from Komoro City and Tsumagoi Village

Starting from Asama-sanso (Tengu Onsen), this route climbs to Mae-kake-yama, the highest accessible point.

  • To Trailhead: Taxi from Komoro Station to Asama-sanso (Tengu Onsen), about 30 min. Paid parking at Asama-sanso for drivers

Mt. Kurofu Route (Kurumazaka Pass)

  • Nearest Station: Shinano Railway, Komoro Station
  • Bus: JR Bus Kanto from Komoro Station to Kurumazaka Pass, about 50 min (summer season only)
  • By Car: Joshinetsu Expressway Komoro IC → Cherry Park Line, about 30 min. Free parking at Kurumazaka Pass (about 50 spaces)
