Trail Overview
Mt. Gassan (月山, Gassan) is the highest peak of the Dewa Sanzan (Three Mountains of Dewa) — a trio of sacred mountains in Yamagata Prefecture that includes Mt. Haguro and Mt. Yudonosan. At 1,984m, it has been revered as a sacred site for mountain asceticism (Shugendo) for over 1,400 years. The Gassan Jinja Hongu shrine at the summit is one of Japan’s most remote and spiritually significant pilgrimage destinations.
Beyond its spiritual significance, Mt. Gassan is celebrated as one of Japan’s finest alpine wildflower mountains. Hundreds of species bloom along the trail from midsummer, and the Gassan Ropeway allows access to 1,500m elevation, making this one of the most accessible Hyakumeizan peaks for beginners and families.
For international visitors: English signage is limited on the trail. Download an offline map (e.g., Yamap or AllTrails) before departing. If visiting the summit shrine, a small offering is customary.
Recommended Route: Gassan Ropeway Upper Station to Summit, Out-and-Back
Take the Gassan Ropeway (lift) to approximately 1,500m, then follow the ridge trail through spectacular wildflower fields to the summit shrine.
