Trail Overview
Mt. Iwatesan (岩手山, Iwate-san) is the highest peak in Tohoku at 2,038m and stands as a prominent isolated stratovolcano in Iwate Prefecture. Its beautifully symmetrical conical silhouette has earned it the nickname “Nanbu Fuji” (南部富士), likening it to Japan’s iconic Mt. Fuji — a symbol of pride for the people of Iwate.
The summit area features a broad outer crater rim encircling the Fudo-daira plateau, with the main summit (Yakushi-dake) rising at the center. The dramatic volcanic landscape, the sweeping crater-rim circuit, and the panoramic views over the Kitakami Basin make this one of Tohoku’s most rewarding mountain experiences.
Important note for foreign visitors: Mt. Iwatesan requires a hiking registration. Bring sufficient water (no water sources on route), carry a portable toilet (required above the 8th station), and check volcanic activity levels before your climb.
Recommended Route: Umagaeshi to Summit, Out-and-Back
The direct ascent from the Umagaeshi (馬返し) trailhead is the classic route. Two trails exist from the 5th station — the old trail (旧道, steeper with views) is preferred for the ascent, while the new trail (新道, forested and gentler) is recommended for the descent.

- Relatively cool temperatures even in peak summer — a welcome escape from city heat
Autumn (September–October)

Volcanic Landscape
- O-hachi (Crater Rim): A roughly 1km-diameter caldera circuit. The 40-minute rim walk offers dramatic views into the volcanic interior
- Fudo-daira Plateau: A broad, sheltered basin within the outer crater — a good rest spot on windy days
