Trail Overview
The Yatsugatake (八ヶ岳) mountain range straddles the border of Nagano and Yamanashi prefectures, with Mt. Akadake (赤岳, 2,899m) as its highest peak. Listed as Hyakumeizan #64, the southern Yatsugatake area is renowned for its rugged rock ridges, well-equipped mountain huts, and sweeping alpine views.
On a clear day, the summit offers an extraordinary panorama spanning Mt. Fuji, the Southern Alps, Northern Alps (Japan Alps), and the Okusecchibu range. The final approaches require scrambling on exposed rocky ridges with fixed chains, making this a route for hikers with some experience in mountain terrain.
A network of well-maintained huts along the ridge — including Akadake Summit Hut and Akadake Tenboso — means you can tackle this mountain as a day hike or spread it over one or two nights.
Recommended Route: Minoto Loop via Minami-sawa and Bunzaburo Ridge
Starting from Minobu-sanso (美濃戸山荘), this classic loop follows Minami-sawa stream to Gyoja-koya hut, then climbs via Bunzaburo Ridge (文三郎尾根) to the summit. Descend via Jizo Ridge (地蔵尾根) back to Gyoja-koya, then return to Minobu via Kita-sawa.
Course Time
| Section | Duration |
|---|---|
| Minobu-sanso → Gyoja-koya Hut (Minami-sawa) | About 2 hrs 30 min |
| Gyoja-koya → Bunzaburo Ridge junction | About 50 min |
| Bunzaburo Ridge junction → Akadake Summit | About 40 min |
| Akadake Summit → Akadake Tenboso Hut | About 20 min |
| Akadake Tenboso → Jizo-no-Kashira → Gyoja-koya | About 50 min |
| Gyoja-koya → Minobu-sanso (Kita-sawa) | About 2 hrs |
| Total (loop, excluding breaks) | About 7 hrs 10 min |
Tip: If you have the energy, extend your hike from Akadake Tenboso along the ridge to Mt. Yokodake (2,829m) and Mt. Iodake (2,760m). Return via Akadake Kozan hut to Minobu for the classic “South Yatsugatake Grand Traverse” — allow about 10 hours total.
Safety Note: Both Bunzaburo Ridge and Jizo Ridge feature steep chains and exposed rock. Wet rock is extremely slippery — take extra caution after rain. Gloves are strongly recommended for the chain sections.
