Trail Overview
Mt. Senjogatake (仙丈ヶ岳, 3,033m) stands on the border of Nagano and Yamanashi prefectures in the Southern Alps (Minami Alps / Akaishi Mountains). It is Hyakumeizan #78 and — in contrast to its rugged neighbor Kaikomagatake — earns its nickname “Queen of the Southern Alps” through graceful, sweeping lines and one of Japan’s most beautiful examples of glacial topography.
Three glacial cirques (圏谷, ken-dani) — Ko-shisenjo Cirque, Senjo Cirque, and Dai-senjo Cirque — carve into the mountain’s flanks, forming natural amphitheaters that cradle snowfields well into summer and burst with alpine wildflowers in late July and August.
The mountain is accessible from Kitazawa-toge Pass (2,036m), shared with Kaikomagatake (Hyakumeizan #77), making it one of the most reachable 3,000m peaks in Japan. A day hike is feasible for fit hikers, while a one-night stay at Senjo-goya Hut or Komanose-no-se Hut gives more time for the flowers and views.
Recommended Route: Kitazawa-toge Loop via Ko-Senjogatake
Ascend through forest to the ridge, then traverse the beautiful Ko-Senjogatake (小仙丈ヶ岳) shoulder for dramatic views of Senjo Cirque before reaching the summit. Descend via Senjo-goya Hut and Uma-no-se Hut back to Kitazawa-toge.

Why “Queen of the Southern Alps”?
While Kaikomagatake is the dramatic, angular “Prince,” Senjogatake’s softer, cirque-carved profile exudes a serene, majestic femininity. The comparison between the two peaks, visible together from many vantage points, is a classic theme in Southern Alps photography and literature.
