Trail Overview

Standing at 599 meters in Hachioji, western Tokyo, Mt. Takao is a Michelin 3-star destination and one of the easiest places to experience spectacular autumn foliage near the capital. Over 1,200 Japanese maple trees (Iroha-momiji and Oo-momiji) paint the mountainside in vivid reds, oranges, and golds from November through early December.

Just 50 minutes from Shinjuku by Keio Line, Mt. Takao offers cable cars and chair lifts alongside well-maintained trails, making it perfect for hikers of all levels, including families with young children.

Mt. Takao attracts roughly 3 million visitors per year, making it the most-climbed mountain in the world. The autumn foliage season is by far the busiest period, so knowing the crowd-beating strategies below is essential.

Foliage Calendar

Thanks to its 400-meter elevation range, autumn colors gradually descend from the summit to the base over the course of about a month.

Best Autumn Foliage Trails

Trail 1 (Omotesando) — The Classic Maple Tunnel Route

The most popular route, fully paved and easy to navigate. The highlight is the stunning tunnel of red maples along the approach to Yakuoin Temple, where crimson leaves frame the vermillion temple gates.

  • Highlight: Vermillion temple gates contrasted with blazing red maples
  • Difficulty: Beginner / family-friendly
  • Cable car option: Take the cable car to skip the lower slopes

Trail 4 (Suspension Bridge) — Natural Forest Foliage

This north-slope trail features Mt. Takao’s only suspension bridge, Miyama-bashi. The beech and Japanese beech trees create a golden canopy that photographers love.

  • Highlight: Miyama Bridge framed by golden and orange foliage
  • Difficulty: Easy-moderate (unpaved sections)
  • Note: Can be slippery after rain

Trail 6 (Biwa Waterfall) — Stream & Foliage Combo

A valley trail following a mountain stream, offering a completely different autumn experience with moss-covered rocks, cascading water, and overhanging maples.

  • Highlight: Biwa Waterfall with autumn colors, mossy stream banks
  • Difficulty: Moderate (rocky stream crossings)
  • Important: During peak autumn weekends, Trail 6 may operate as uphill-only from 8 AM to 2 PM due to congestion

Top Foliage Spots

Cable Car Line

The 6-minute cable car ride itself is a highlight. As you ascend one of Japan’s steepest cable car gradients, Japanese maples fill both sides of the track. The observation deck at the upper station offers panoramic views over the Kanto Plain.

Yakuoin Temple Approach

The main highlight of Trail 1. Passing through the Nio-mon gate, you enter a corridor of overhanging maples with the vermillion temple buildings creating a quintessentially Japanese autumn scene.

Momiji-dai (Maple Plateau)

Located just beyond the summit, this aptly named plateau is a grove of mature maple trees that provides the best foliage density on the mountain. It is less crowded than the summit and has a tea house serving hot mushroom soup. On clear days, you can see Mt. Fuji from here.

Summit Plaza

At 599 meters, the summit offers views of Mt. Fuji framed by autumn colors on clear days. However, it gets extremely crowded during peak foliage weekends — arrive early for the best experience.

Crowd-Beating Strategies

Peak autumn weekends in November can see up to 30,000 visitors per day. Here is how to enjoy the foliage without the masses.

Start Early

Arrive at Takaosanguchi Station before 8 AM. The cable car starts at 8:00, but if you begin hiking on foot, there is zero wait time. You can reach the summit by 9:30 AM and enjoy the foliage in relative peace.

Skip the Cable Car Queue

During peak autumn, cable car waits can reach 30-60 minutes. Alternatives:

  • Take the chair lift: Often shorter wait times than the cable car (490 yen one way, 12 minutes)
  • Hike up Trail 1: Fully paved and safe, about 90 minutes to the summit
  • Choose Trail 6 or Inariyama Ridge: No cable car needed, and you will experience natural forest foliage

Descend via Ura-Takao (Back Takao)

Instead of returning the way you came, continue from the summit toward Mt. Kobotoke-Shiroyama and descend via the Hikagesawa trail to JR Takao Station (bus connection). This completely avoids the crowded front trails and offers quiet mountain scenery.

Visit on a Weekday

If your schedule allows, weekday visits see less than half the weekend crowds. Cable car waits are minimal, and you can enjoy a much more relaxed experience.
