Trail Overview — Three Weeks of Cherry Blossoms on One Mountain

Mt. Takao (高尾山, Takao-san, 599m) sits in Hachioji City, western Tokyo, and draws approximately 3 million hikers per year — making it the most-climbed mountain in the world. It is just 50 minutes from Shinjuku on the Keio Line.

What makes Mt. Takao special for cherry blossom season is the elevation range: blossoms start at the base (around 200m) in late March, move up the slopes through early April, and finish at the summit (599m) and Itchodaira area in mid to late April. This means you get roughly three weeks of sakura — far longer than most parks in central Tokyo.

The star attraction is Itchodaira’s “Thousand Cherry Trees” (Senbonzakura), a grove of approximately 1,000 Yamazakura trees located about 30 minutes past the summit on the trail toward Mt. Kobotoke-Shiroyama. Combined with pink Mitsuba-tsutsuji (azalea) blooming at the same time, it is a genuinely stunning sight.

Tip: Tokyo’s downtown cherry blossoms peak about 1–2 weeks before Mt. Takao’s. If you missed hanami in Ueno or Meguro, Mt. Takao gives you a second chance.

Best Hanami Hiking Trails Compared

Mt. Takao has seven marked trails. For cherry blossoms, these three stand out.

Trail 1 (Omotesando Course) — The Classic Hanami Route

Difficulty: 1/5 | Distance: 3.8 km (one way) | Time: ~90 min (one way)

The most popular trail, fully paved from base to summit. A cable car or chairlift covers the first half in 6 minutes, making this an easy option for families, older hikers, or anyone who wants to save energy for the summit and beyond.

Cherry blossom highlights:

  • Somei Yoshino around the cable car base (Kiyotaki Station plaza)
  • Panoramic views with sakura from the Kasumidai observation deck
  • Weeping cherry trees at Yakuoin Temple’s Niomon gate
  • Late-blooming Yaezakura along the Yakuoin approach (mid – late April)

Tip: Using the cable car lets you focus on the most scenic mid-slope to summit section. This is the best choice if you are hiking with children.

Trail 4 (Suspension Bridge Course) — Yamazakura in the Forest

Difficulty: 2/5 | Distance: 1.5 km | Time: ~50 min

The only trail on Mt. Takao with a suspension bridge (Miyama Bridge). It runs along the north slope through beech and fir forest, where Yamazakura bloom among fresh green foliage — a more natural and atmospheric hanami experience.

Cherry blossom highlights:

  • Yamazakura framing the suspension bridge
  • Contrast between pale cherry blossoms and vivid new leaves

Note: Trail 4 branches off from the Joshinmon gate on Trail 1. The easiest approach is to take the cable car to mid-slope, then switch to Trail 4. There are no restrooms on this trail.

Inariyama Trail — Quiet Ridge Walk with Sakura Views

Difficulty: 2/5 | Distance: 3.1 km (one way) | Time: ~90 min (one way)

A ridge trail that starts just left of the cable car station at the base. Far fewer hikers than Trail 1, making it ideal for those who want a peaceful hanami experience. The Inariyama observation deck offers open views toward central Tokyo.

Cherry blossom highlights:

  • Scattered Yamazakura along the ridge
  • Cherry trees near the Inariyama observation deck
  • Sakura-lined section where the trail meets the summit area

Note: This is an unpaved mountain trail. Sneakers work but hiking shoes are recommended. There are no restrooms along the route.

Cherry Blossom Spots in Detail

Kiyotaki Station Plaza

The cable car base area is lined with Somei Yoshino trees that peak in late March to early April. There are benches and a snack shop, so it doubles as a pleasant rest stop before or after your hike.

Kasumidai Observation Deck (Trail 1)

Just outside the upper cable car station, this deck offers cherry trees with a panoramic view of Tokyo’s skyline. On clear days you can spot Tokyo Skytree. The beer garden area (summer only) is surrounded by blossoms in spring.

Yakuoin Temple Approach

The path to Yakuoin Temple features weeping cherry trees and late-blooming Yaezakura. The weeping cherry at the Niomon gate is especially photogenic. Best from early to mid-April.

Summit Plaza

The 599m summit has Yamazakura and, on clear mornings, you can photograph cherry blossoms with Mt. Fuji in the background. Tables and benches are available for a picnic lunch. Peak bloom is mid-April.

Itchodaira (Senbonzakura)

About 30 minutes past the summit toward Mt. Kobotoke-Shiroyama, this open clearing is Mt. Takao’s premier sakura spot. Roughly 1,000 Yamazakura trees bloom alongside bright pink Mitsuba-tsutsuji azaleas. Benches and tables make it a perfect picnic spot. Mid to late April is the best time.

Tip: Because Itchodaira is beyond the summit, most casual visitors never make it here. It is the best-kept cherry blossom secret on Mt. Takao.

Beating the Crowds — Hanami Strategy

Cherry blossom season (late March – mid-April) is one of the busiest times on Mt. Takao. Here is how to enjoy it without the stress.

By Time of Day

TimeCrowdingRecommendation
Early morning (before 7 AM)Very lowBest time — you may have trails to yourself
Morning (7–9 AM)LowStill pleasant
Late morning (9 AM – noon)Very highPeak crowds — avoid if possible
Afternoon (noon – 3 PM)HighSomewhat crowded
Late afternoon (after 3 PM)LowGood option; you will pass descending hikers

Tip: Arriving before 7 AM is the single best thing you can do. The cable car starts at 8 AM (varies by season), so plan to walk up. The reward is a quiet mountain with cherry blossoms all to yourself.

By Trail Choice

  • Skip Trail 1 if you want to avoid crowds. Most tourists stick to the paved main route.
  • Head for Itchodaira: Very few people walk past the summit. The best cherry blossoms are also the least crowded.
  • Use Trail 4 or Inariyama Trail for a more peaceful experience.

By Day of the Week

  • Weekdays are dramatically quieter — worth taking a day off work.
  • If you must go on a weekend, combine early morning + Inariyama Trail + Itchodaira for maximum peace.

Access Information

  • Nearest station: Takaosanguchi Station (Keio Takao Line)
  • From Shinjuku: Keio Line limited express, about 50 min, ~430 yen (IC card accepted)
  • From Tokyo Station: JR Chuo Line to Takao Station (~60 min), then transfer to Keio Line for 1 stop
  • Cable car: Kiyotaki Station to Takaosan Station, 6 min ride. Adults: 490 yen one way / 950 yen round trip
  • Chairlift: Same price and stations as the cable car; ~12 min ride, open-air seats
  • Parking: Yakuoin parking lot (paid, ~80 spaces). Fills up early on sakura-season weekends — public transport strongly recommended

Tip: Keio offers a “Mt. Takao Discount Ticket” that bundles the round-trip train fare with a cable car or chairlift pass at roughly a 20% discount. Buy it at Keio Line ticket machines.

For Visitors Using a Japan Rail Pass

The JR Pass covers the Chuo Line to Takao Station, but not the Keio Line to Takaosanguchi. From JR Takao Station, it is a short (and cheap) one-stop transfer on Keio, or about a 15-minute walk to the trailhead.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to see cherry blossoms on Mt. Takao?

Somei Yoshino trees at the base bloom late March to early April. Weeping cherry and mid-slope varieties peak in early to mid-April. Yamazakura at the summit and Itchodaira area are best mid to late April. The elevation range gives you roughly three weeks of sakura viewing.

How crowded is Mt. Takao during cherry blossom season?

Very crowded on weekends, especially Trail 1 between 9 AM and 2 PM. Weekdays are significantly quieter. Early mornings (before 7 AM) and late afternoons are the calmest windows.

Can I see Mt. Fuji during cherry blossom season?

Spring air tends to be hazy, so Fuji views are less reliable than in winter. Your best chance is early morning (7–8 AM) before the haze builds up. The summit and Itchodaira both offer Fuji viewpoints.

Is the Itchodaira Senbonzakura worth the extra walk?

Absolutely. It takes 30 minutes beyond the summit on a well-maintained trail. With 1,000 Yamazakura trees and far fewer visitors than the summit, it is arguably the best cherry blossom spot on the entire mountain.

Do I need to book the cable car in advance?

No. Tickets are sold at the station on a first-come basis. During peak sakura weekends, expect a 15–30 minute wait around mid-morning. Going early avoids the queue entirely.
